In short

A 2-week tattoo is a temporary tattoo without needles. Its jagua-based ink only stains the top layer of your skin and turns dark blue to black within 24–48 hours. It lasts up to 2 weeks and fades naturally as that layer renews itself – faster on hands and feet, slower on the upper arm or back.

A 2-week tattoo sits right between a stick-on tattoo and the real thing. It looks like ink under your skin, not like a sticker on top of it – and it is gone again after up to 2 weeks. No needles, no pain, no commitment. Here is how it actually works, how long it really lasts and what you can do to make it last longer.

What is a 2-week tattoo?

A 2-week tattoo is a temporary tattoo that colors the top layer of your skin for a limited time. You apply it with just water: place it, soak the backing paper, peel it off. Over the next 24–48 hours the ink develops from a faint blue into a dark blue to black that looks like a fresh tattoo.

The big difference to a real tattoo is depth. A tattoo artist uses needles to bring ink into the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, where it stays for life. Tattup ink stays in the epidermis, the outer layer that your body renews on its own. That is why it fades instead of staying forever.

How does the ink work?

The active ingredient in Tattup ink is the fruit extract of Genipa americana, a tropical fruit from Central and South America also known as jagua. Indigenous communities have used jagua for body art for centuries.

The extract contains genipin. Once the water-based ink sits on your skin, genipin reacts with the amino acids in the proteins of your top skin layer and forms a blue-black pigment. That reaction takes time – which is why your tattoo looks barely there right after applying it and only reaches its full color after one to two days.

Good to knowBecause the color comes from a reaction with your skin, the final shade varies slightly from person to person: from deep navy to almost black. On deeper skin tones the result often looks especially strong.

What happens from day 0 to day 14?

  1. ApplyRight after peeling off the paper the design is light blue and faint. Totally normal.
  2. Let it setNo water, no rubbing, loose clothes. After that you can shower normally.
  3. Full colorThe ink darkens to deep blue or black and looks like a real tattoo.
  4. Peak lookCrisp lines and full color, as long as the area sees little friction.
  5. Natural fadeYour skin renews its top layer and the tattoo fades evenly, without peeling.

How long does it really last?

Most Tattups last up to 2 weeks. That is roughly the time your outermost skin layer needs to renew itself: a study on forearm skin measured an average turnover of the stratum corneum of 14.5 days. How long your tattoo lasts depends on four things:

  • Body area: less friction and less water contact means longer wear.
  • Daily habits: frequent hand washing, sports with lots of friction or long baths speed up fading.
  • Application: if the backing paper was fully soaked, the whole design develops evenly.
  • Your skin: skin chemistry and renewal speed differ from person to person.
Body area Wear time Why
Upper arm, shoulder, back Longest Little friction, little water
Inner forearm Long Low friction, highly visible
Chest, ribs, thigh Long to medium Depends on tight clothing
Wrist, hand, fingers Shorter Lots of movement and hand washing
Feet, ankles Shorter Shoe friction and constant movement
Snake tattoo on the upper arm, a spot with long wear time
Small script tattoos on the fingers, which fade faster

How do you make it last longer?

  1. Leave it alone for 8 hours. No water, no rubbing, no tight sleeves while the ink sets.
  2. Warmth helps. After those 8 hours a warm shower or a light sweat helps the color develop deeper.
  3. Pick the right spot. Upper arm, shoulder, back or inner forearm hold longest.
  4. From 48 hours on, once the colour has fully developed: apply a light, oil-free lotion daily. Oily products and body oils make it fade faster.
  5. Skip scrubs. Peelings, exfoliating gloves and hard scrubbing remove the top skin layer – and your tattoo with it.

As with any cosmetic, an allergic reaction can never be ruled out completely, so a patch test makes sense if you have sensitive skin. Frequently asked questions

How long does a Tattup tattoo last?

Up to 2 weeks. By then the top layer of your skin has renewed itself and the tattoo is gone.

How to make it last longer:

  • First 8 hours: no water, no rubbing.
  • First day: avoid contact as much as you can, wear loose clothes.
  • First 2 nights: wear something loose to sleep in – especially with a sleeve.
  • Choose spots with little friction.
  • From 48 hours on, once the colour has fully developed: apply a light, oil-free lotion daily.
  • Don’t scrub or exfoliate.

Our guide shows how long it lasts on each part of the body.

How does Tattup actually work?

The ink sinks into the top layer of your skin and reacts there with your skin’s amino acids. Within 24–48 hours this creates a dark blue to black tattoo – no needles, nothing goes deep into the skin.

It lasts up to 2 weeks, then fades on its own as this layer of skin keeps renewing itself.

Are Tattup tattoos water-resistant?

Yes. From the next day on you can shower, swim, do sports and go to the sauna. 💦

Just for the first 8 hours: no water, no rubbing.

Good to know: lots of water and rubbing make it fade a little faster.

How do I remove a Tattup tattoo?

Warm salt water and a gentle scrub (body scrub or washcloth) make it fade faster. Don’t overdo it if your skin is sensitive.

Right after applying you can still simply wash it off.

Do Tattup tattoos expire?

Yes. Unopened and stored somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, they keep for about 12 months. After that they work less well.
